Whitehorse, Yukon Territory to Delta Junction Alaska

Today was a little of the same.  These towns you go through are very very small and don't seem to be thriving.  Not sure how they make it or how much longer they will be there.

We left Whitehorse after having breakfast at Tim Horton.  We drove to Haines junction.  We have seen a black bear, a grizzly bear, bison, elk, and trumpeter swans.  A lot of the overlooks are really not overlooks just parking lots as the trees are grown up to tall to see anything.  Several times we just slowed down on the road and took pictures. Not many people on the road.

Summer is construction time on the AlCan.  So we were slowed a bit as we followed guides through the construction area.

 The roads are made of gravel that are compacted and then covered with a sealant.  The frost heaves caused by the freezing and thawing of the permafrost are like riding on a roller coaster in a car.  Some of the dips had our luggage flying upd in the back.

We then drove on to Destruction Bay, Burwash Landing with more road construction.  The roads in this section are not good because of the permafrost layer.  All still in the Yukon.  The wild flowers along the road have been beautiful.

Border crossing was next where we crossed into Alaska.  More road construction then Tok was next .  Cell service came back almost immediately once we came into Alaska.

Delta Junction is where we are tonight.  We are staying at Garden Bed and Breakfast.  Beautiful home with small cabins as well.  We are in one of the cabins.  It is now 10:00, raining and completely daylight.  The sun goes down at 12:15 and then is up at 3:27.  Dave says it will never get dark.  We will be in what they call civil twilight.

Rick and Bonnie are the owners along with the dog Apollo.  Sweet chocolate lab (Made me miss Bonnie and Bella).  Great couple.  He is retired from  running the commissary on the army base here and they both love to garden and the grounds are beautiful.  One of the other couples staying there said it will be even better in a couple of weeks.  Breakfast was fantastic.  Fresh wild blueberry pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice, coffee and fruit.  Yum!!!!



Today is on to Fairbanks and beyond.
