Heimaey Island is the in the archipelago of Iceland. It is the only populated island off the coast and boast. Population of 4400 people who live there all year. Fishing is the main source of income of the local people with tourism coming in a close second. It is a great tourist destination because of the large Puffin population. The sights of high cliffs, moss covered cliffftops And nesting birds along the cliffs makes for beautiful sights. A large volcanic eruption in 1973 almost destroyed the town and the lava formations are very evident as you sail into port The rock formations are just fascinating in these water. The day was the most beautiful day we have had in a week. Sunny warm and in the 70's. Several of the cruises after us could not get into this island because of the wind. So we were very fortunate.
The approach into the island docking are was so beautiful. Unfortunately we were to big to dock so we tendered in but anchored right next to a big rock formation where you could see the birds nesting.
